Thomson Navel is a mid-season Navel orange variety, originating from a spontaneous mutation of Washington Navel discovered around 1891 in California. The tree is less vigorous and more compact than its parent, often semi-dwarf, and shows higher productivity. The fruit is slightly smaller than Washington, globose to slightly oval or ellipsoid in shape, with a smooth, fine rind and good external color. Its flesh is sweet, well-colored, and flavorful, though with moderate juice content. Valued for its earliness, Thomson Navel matures about 10 days earlier than Washington, with a harvest period extending from November to January.
